European Regulators Grant Certification to Safran’s Electric Motor
Date: February 7, 2025
Leading the charge in advanced air mobility (AAM), Safran Electrical and Power, a division of aerospace giant Safran, has made history by securing the world’s first type certification for an electric motor designed for civil aviation.
The ENGINeUS 100 series was certified as airworthy under EASA’s special condition SC E-19, making it the only special condition globally tailored for electric and hybrid propulsion systems. This milestone enables Safran to equip small aircraft with electric engines, starting with Diamond Aircraft’s eDA40, before advancing to larger models.
Rachel Daeschler, EASA Certification Director, stated, “This was a fascinating project for EASA, and the first test of our Special Condition designed for the certification of hybrid and all-electric propulsion. EASA is fully committed to supporting the development and certification of propulsion technologies aimed at decarbonizing aviation. We congratulate Safran for this key achievement, which paves the way for the electrification of aviation, for small airplanes and beyond.”
Safran’s ENGINeUS electric motor boasts adaptability to various requirements within the emerging mobility market. It can be integrated into multiple frameworks, ranging from fully electric propulsion for small aircraft accommodating two to four passengers, to hybrid-electric systems for small regional transport aircraft capable of carrying 19 passengers, and evolving into future electric hybrid commercial aircraft engines designed for up to 150 passengers.
