Saronic Secures $600M for Autonomous Naval Vessels, Plans Advanced Shipyard
In a significant advancement for autonomous maritime defense technology, the Texas-based defense contractor Saronic has successfully secured $600 million in funding, boosting its valuation to $4 billion. Established less than three years ago, Saronic is poised to expand its unmanned surface vessel (USV) program and intends to develop a cutting-edge shipyard facility named Port Alpha, according to a report by Axios.

Saronic’s current offerings include three unique platforms, with the 24-foot Corsair serving as the flagship. This vessel boasts impressive specifications, including a range of 1,000 nautical miles and a notable payload capacity of 1,000 pounds. With speeds exceeding 35 knots, the Corsair carries a fuel load that surpasses the total weight of its smaller counterparts, the 14-foot Cutlass and the 6-foot Spyglass, which provide versatile options for various maritime missions.

Saronic’s rapid growth occurs at a pivotal moment for American shipbuilding. The industry faces significant workforce shortages and Navy priority projects are experiencing delays, while challenges with aging vessels persist. During a press briefing, cofounder Rob Lehman stated, “We are developing a new class of vessels using innovative building methods that circumvent some of the constraints of the current shipbuilding industrial base.”
