Pierce Aerospace Receives Follow-On Award for FAA Remote ID Research
Pierce Aerospace, a leading provider of UAS Remote Identification technologies, has been awarded a follow-on project by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in support of the FAA’s Alliance for System Safety of UAS Through Research Excellence (ASSURE). This marks the second consecutive award for the company related to its Remote ID initiatives with ERAU, alongside the significant milestone of detecting 100 million Remote ID transmissions since the project’s inception.
CEO Aaron Pierce expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue contributing to advanced Remote Identification research. He stated, “The FAA ASSURE program is essential for integrating UAS operations into the National Airspace System. Our initial deployment of Remote ID sensors across varied airspaces provided valuable data, and this new phase will broaden our research to encompass entire cities and additional airports, enhancing airspace safety further.”
Ryan Wallace, Principal Investigator and Associate Professor at ERAU, remarked on the potential of Remote ID to deliver crucial insights regarding UAS operations within the National Airspace System (NAS). He emphasized that this follow-on research aims to utilize unique detection data to improve safety and security frameworks for NAS in collaboration with research partners at Kansas State University, Wichita State University, and the University of North Dakota.
According to Pierce, the ASSURE program significantly benefits the FAA by generating extensive data collection through a cost-sharing model, leading to savings that would otherwise hinder data access. The project aims to deploy additional Remote ID sensors throughout the country, expanding the dataset considerably, ultimately aiding the FAA and various aviation stakeholders.
ASSURE encompasses 30 premier research institutions and over 100 industry and government affiliates, exemplifying expertise in critical areas such as air traffic interoperability and safety protocols for UAS operations. Pierce highlighted that Remote ID technology is foundational for the future scalability of commercial UAS operations and underscores the FAA’s pivotal global leadership role.
