Honeywell Survey Indicates Strong Passenger Interest in eVTOL Technology
Date: March 5, 2025
Honeywell Aerospace has released a compelling survey revealing that an overwhelming majority of U.S. airline passengers—98%—are open to utilizing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, often referred to as air taxis, for airport transport. The study was conducted with 1,000 U.S. adults who have taken at least five round-trip flights in the preceding year, and it also discovered that 79% of participants would likely fly more frequently if air taxi services were made available.
The survey highlights several motivating factors for this interest in eVTOLs. The primary concern among participants was reducing travel time, with 47% indicating that the prospect of avoiding traffic was a crucial incentive. Additional reasons included convenience (61%), cost (61%), environmental benefits (44%), and a sense of innovation (44%).
“Anyone who travels often will tell you that the trip to and from the airport frequently adds unnecessary time, expense, and stress to their journey,” commented Dave Shilliday, Honeywell Aerospace Technologies’ VP and general manager of Advanced Air Mobility. “Air taxis present a safe, speedy, and advanced alternative to conventional transportation options.”
Demographics of Support for Air Taxis
The enthusiasm for air taxis is particularly pronounced among millennials, with 65% of this group expressing excitement about the option, compared to 58% of respondents overall. Frequent flyers—defined as those who have taken more than 10 flights in the past year—showed greater interest (67%) than those who traveled less frequently (56%). Moreover, business travelers demonstrated a preference for air taxis (60%) over leisure travelers (45%).
Potential Applications and Concerns
Respondents identified traveling between cities that are within 100 miles of each other as the primary use case for air taxis (41%). Other suggested applications include transport from suburban airports to city centers (31%) and facilitating connections between flights in neighboring cities (28%).
Despite the interest in this innovative transportation method, safety remains a paramount concern, with 65% of survey participants emphasizing its significance. Honeywell, a leader in aviation technology for advanced air mobility, is actively collaborating with regulators and industry stakeholders to assist in the integration and certification of these next-generation aircraft.
This survey was conducted by Wakefield Research from December 5 to December 12, 2024, utilizing email invitations and online questionnaires.
