Extended Deadline for Electromagnetic Weapons and Electronic Warfare on Uncrewed Vehicles
Date: May 15, 2025
The U.S. Navy is extending the deadline for contractors to respond to a solicitation aimed at enhancing electronic warfare (EW) and electromagnetic weapons technologies for use with uncrewed vehicles. This extension allows companies until May 22, 2025, to submit their solutions to the Naval Surface Warfare Center located in Crane, Indiana.
The call for responses falls under the Prototyping Research and Operations for Tactical Electromagnetic Warfare and Advanced Networking (PROTEAN) project. The initiative seeks to facilitate the integration and evaluation of defense contractors’ EW technologies on uncrewed vehicles, with the previous submission deadline set for April 30, 2025.
Understanding Electromagnetic Weapons
Currently, there is a gap in demonstrating effective electronic warfare and electromagnetic weapon systems on uncrewed platforms. Navy officials note that electromagnetic weapons, such as high-power microwaves and electromagnetic pulse systems, are designed to disrupt or incapacitate critical electronic components and subsystems within military installations.
This project also aims to tackle various challenges, including technical integration, lack of standardization, insufficient testing and evaluation processes, and operational effectiveness. Furthermore, it hopes to enhance innovation within the field.
Companies wishing to participate in this solicitation must belong to the Strategic & Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) Consortium. Interested parties can apply for consortium membership on their website: S2MARTS Consortium Membership.
Responses must be submitted by May 22, 2025, via email to Judy Blanton at [email protected] and Lance Buechler at [email protected]. For inquiries, the Navy encourages direct communication with Judy Blanton at 812-381-7156 or Lance Buechler at 812-381-2969.
