DJI RC Pro 2 Review: An In-Depth Exploration
Hello everyone! This is Shawn from Air Photography. Recently, DJI revealed the highly anticipated Mavic 4 Pro along with the new RC Pro 2 controller. While I previously discussed the RC Pro 2 in my Mavic 4 review video, I’ve decided to provide a standalone review for those interested in using it with models such as the Air 3S, Air 3, or Mini 4 Pro.
Compatibility and Design
The RC Pro 2, at launch, is compatible with the Mini 4 Pro, Air 3, Air 3S, and Mavic 4. Some users have raised concerns about its weight, size, and comfort level. Initially, I shared these concerns, unsure whether it would feel unbalanced or uncomfortable. However, after testing it, I found it to be enjoyable to use. The larger screen enriches the flying experience, and despite its size, it is only marginally bulkier than the previous RC 2, weighing in at 743 grams compared to the RC 2’s 424 grams. This additional weight is noticeable but not overly cumbersome.
Display and Usability
The RC Pro 2 comes equipped with a 7-inch Mini LED screen, which boasts a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and a sustained brightness of 1,600 nits. This is a significant improvement over the original RC Pro’s 1,000 nits. The screen automatically activates upon unfolding, while the control sticks fold into the body for easy deployment. A notable feature is the rotatable screen, tailored for vertical video recording. The DJI Fly App automatically adjusts to this vertical orientation, providing a larger preview and facilitating straightforward access to settings. When the screen is rotated, the camera on the Mavic 4 Pro or Mini 4 Pro adjusts automatically, making vertical filming much simpler.
Audio and Connectivity
The RC Pro 2 features a built-in microphone, ideal for creators looking to record commentary or integrate audio seamlessly into HD videos. The DJI Fly app offers two noise reduction settings: Natural, which maintains some ambient sounds while lessening drone noise, and Pure, isolating human voices but possibly altering the natural sound.
Additionally, it accommodates DJI Mics through a direct receiver connection or Bluetooth, enhancing audio quality. A new foldable antenna design boosts connectivity, and it supports third-party applications for direct video editing on the device.
Storage and Ports
With 128 GB of onboard storage plus a memory card slot, the RC Pro 2 provides ample space for your footage. It incorporates a USB-C port for charging, firmware updates, or data transfers and an HDMI port for external displays. When closed, the controller functions like a mini tablet, allowing for editing and sharing directly within the DJI Fly app.
Controls and Customization
Equipped with standard DJI controller buttons along with two customizable buttons, the RC Pro 2 also includes a scroll wheel to adjust camera settings and a 5D button for menu navigation. Dials allow control over gimbal tilt, zoom, or camera rotation (on the Mavic 4 Pro), and the user interface is highly customizable. Battery life supports about four hours of operation, with adjustable volume and brightness settings including adaptive brightness for different environments.
Advanced Features
This new controller enhances log footage playback by providing color display assistance for more accurate imagery. It supports dynamic home point updates for safer navigation, especially when moving, as in a vehicle. There’s also a new flight simulator, which offers basic training for beginners and engaging flight scenarios, closely mirroring the DJI Fly app interface. Users can modify settings, switch cameras, and practice waypoint missions with realistic graphics, obstacle avoidance, and crash playback features for more effective learning.
Final Thoughts
The RC Pro 2 features an excellent 7-inch screen, and while larger than previous controllers, it remains user-friendly. The adjustable angle enhances comfort for different holding styles. Initial adjustments may be needed, but you’ll quickly adapt. Thanks for tuning in! I hope this review has been helpful. See you in the next one!
