STMicroelectronics Introduces Gallium Nitride (GaN) Power Converter for Fast Chargers
On May 16, 2025, STMicroelectronics unveiled its VIPerGaN65D flyback converter, aimed at supporting compact, low-cost fast chargers, adapters, digital cameras, and set-top boxes. This innovation effectively addresses the increasing demand for efficient power solutions in compact electronics.
The VIPerGaN65D is designed in a SOIC16 package, offering an economical solution for power supplies, adapters, and USB Power Delivery (PD) fast chargers with a maximum output of 65 Watts and compatibility with universal input voltage standards.
At the heart of the converter is a 700-volt GaN transistor paired with an optimized gate driver, featuring leading protection functionalities. This GaN transistor functions efficiently at clock frequencies reaching up to 240 kHz while minimizing switching losses.
Zero-Voltage Switching Enhancements
The VIPerGaN65D leverages zero-voltage switching technology, enabling it to synchronize its valley delay for optimal performance, ensuring that the GaN transistor powers on precisely at the optimal point of drain resonance.
This converter also integrates dynamic blanking time to maintain high efficiency levels as input voltage varies, ensuring optimal performance regardless of load conditions.
With a current limit set at 3.5 amps, this device can provide up to 65 Watts when configured for a wide universal input voltage range of 85 to 265 volts. Additionally, when designed for input voltages between 185 and 265 volts, it can achieve a maximum power rating of up to 85 Watts.
