STMicro Introduces Microcontrollers and Rust Compilers for Safety-Critical Applications

STMicroelectronics Launches Rust Compilers for Safety-Critical Microcontrollers

Date: February 13, 2025

STMicroelectronics has announced a partnership with HighTec EDV-Systeme GmbH to enhance the development of safety-critical microcontrollers and software solutions. This collaboration aims to ensure that software-defined vehicles meet rigorous safety standards with improved efficiency.

Revolutionizing Automotive Safety Software

This innovative solution incorporates the Rust programming language alongside C/C++ integration, utilizing a Rust compiler that has attained ISO 26262 ASIL D qualification. STMicro’s Stellar microcontrollers, also meeting this stringent safety certification, utilize 28-nanometer technology. Rust is witnessing heightened adoption in the automotive sector due to its robust safety and reliability features.

Efficiency in Development

The integration of the ASIL D qualified Rust compiler within the Stellar microcontroller framework accelerates the creation of safety-critical applications. This approach not only aids in meeting strict automotive safety protocols but also helps reduce time-to-market, offering developers a significant edge.

Advantages of Rust

Rust enhances the safety of memory management, process threads, and data types, thereby ensuring resilience vital for critical automotive systems. Furthermore, the runtime performance of STMicro’s components is on par with traditional C/C++ in terms of execution speed and memory utilization, effectively lowering software development and maintenance expenses.

The Stellar microcontrollers are designed with Arm Cortex-R52+ cores, emphasizing a safety-oriented hardware architecture. They are compliant with relevant ISO standards, including ISO 26262 ASIL D for safety and ISO 21434 for cybersecurity, also addressing UN155 regulations.
