Airbus and Primoco UAV Demonstrate AI-Powered Drone Swarming in Surveillance Tests

On February 13, 2025, European aerospace leader Airbus and Czech company Primoco UAV showcased groundbreaking advancements in drone technology with a series of surveillance flight tests in the Czech Republic. The objective was to evaluate Airbus’ innovative teaming intelligence software for real-time management of drone swarms, utilizing Primoco’s medium-sized UAVs at Písek-Krašovice airport.

Highlights from the Successful Flight Tests

The tests featured two Primoco One 150 UAVs dispatched to targeted zones, with operators at the Airbus ground station leveraging the teaming intelligence software to designate specific surveillance areas for each drone. Armed with artificial intelligence-driven automatic target recognition (ATR) technology, both UAVs were capable of detecting threats concurrently. One UAV successfully pinpointed a simulated threat and relayed valuable geodata concerning an opposing air defense system back to the ground station.

In the subsequent flight simulation, the drones were assigned independent roles. One UAV focused on monitoring the target area and utilizing Airbus’ AI-based ATR to identify potential threats, while the second UAV remained poised in standby mode. Upon the first UAV’s detection of an enemy threat, the integration of the teaming software allowed it to instruct the second UAV to ascertain the nature of the identified threat—an enemy air defense system—using the same AI technologies and report its findings.

Integration of Third-Party Applications

The demonstration also underscored the versatility of the swarming program, successfully integrating third-party applications alongside Airbus’ ATR. This adaptability proves vital as the technology can be incorporated across a diverse range of platforms and applications.

Looking Ahead

Future collaborations between Airbus and Primoco will continue to refine the teaming intelligence software for broader applicability across various types of aircraft, including fixed-wing, rotary-wing, both crewed and uncrewed systems, along with the integration of additional external software for automated target recognition. While the initial tests emphasized military end-use, the developers envision significant potential for these drone management capabilities in sectors like infrastructure inspection.
