NASA Requests Industry Feedback on Cryogenic Hydrogen Testing Facility

NASA Seeks Industry Input on Cryogenic Hydrogen Test Facility

CLEVELAND – NASA’s Glenn Research Center has released a Request for Information (RFI), calling for industry contributions regarding the construction of a facility aimed at advancing hydrogen technology for aviation applications. This initiative will evaluate the feasibility and interest of collaborating on a testing facility dedicated to cryogenic hydrogen, a crucial aspect of future sustainable aviation.

This endeavor aligns with NASA’s Transformative Aeronautics Concepts Program (TACP), which promotes novel ideas and experimental research to enhance aviation practices. Within TACP, the Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) project directly addresses system-level challenges that demand innovative and impactful solutions.

Navigating the resurgence of hydrogen as a viable energy source in aeronautics and other transportation sectors, NASA recognizes the substantial infrastructure and expertise required for cryogenic hydrogen testing. Establishing a dedicated facility could effectively fill current research and technology gaps.

The agency is inviting insights from industry, academia, and governmental bodies to better comprehend the requirements and needs of a potential cryogenic hydrogen test facility. Specifically, feedback on existing testing capabilities and future necessities is sought. The objective is to ensure system integrity through proper testing protocols in both ground and flight scenarios.

Additionally, NASA is interested in understanding material limitations that could influence cryogenic hydrogen applications. Insights regarding infrastructure necessities—such as site specifications and scalability—are also requested. Establishing standards for safe operations and cost-efficient testing, along with workforce training and educational partnerships, is part of NASA’s goals.

Responses should be submitted electronically in PDF format, capped at 10 pages, by 3:00 PM EST on February 28, 2025. Interested parties can send their submissions to contracting officer Ian Park at ian.park@nasa.gov, while indicating reference number 80GRC025RFI0001. More details can be found on the government procurement site: SAM.gov.
