Starlab Space Finishes Preliminary Design Review for Commercial Space Station

Starlab Space LLC has successfully completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for its upcoming commercial space station, a significant advancement in its development journey. The review was conducted in partnership with NASA and has validated that the station’s architecture, systems, and integration strategies are set for the next stages of design and hardware readiness.

Tim Kopra, the CEO of Starlab, remarked, “This milestone confirms that our space station design is technically sound and suitable for crewed astronaut operations. We will now concentrate on full-scale development alongside our partners, which includes producing essential hardware and integrating software systems.”

Moving forward, Starlab plans to create a System Integration Lab, secure necessary materials, and develop a high-fidelity mock-up for astronaut training purposes. Additionally, the company is expanding its presence in Bremen, Germany, to facilitate assembly and testing operations.

Dylan Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Voyager Technologies, which is a major stakeholder in Starlab’s joint venture, stated, “Starlab’s advancements showcase our unified commitment to maintaining U.S. leadership in low-Earth orbit. We aim to enhance human spaceflight, ensure a constant human presence in LEO, and create a vibrant commercial space ecosystem through investment and collaboration with key allies and international partners.”

Starlab represents a collaboration between Voyager Technologies based in Denver, Airbus located in Leiden, Netherlands, Mitsubishi Corporation from Tokyo, Japan, and MDA Space in Brampton, Ontario. The initiative has been bolstered with a funding of $217.5 million from NASA under the Commercial LEO Destinations Phase 1 program, along with additional investments from the Texas Space Commission and international partners.
