BYD Launches Roof-Mounted DJI Drone System for Select Vehicle Models
In an exciting collaboration with DJI, the Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD has introduced a groundbreaking roof-mounted drone system known as the Ling Yuan. This feature is designed for select vehicles from BYD, allowing drivers to capture stunning aerial footage while on the move. Priced around ¥16,000 (approximately $2,200), the system will soon be available across multiple BYD models.
A High-Tech Upgrade for BYD Vehicles
The concept of integrating a roof-mounted drone was first showcased by BYD in 2023 with the Yangwang U8 SUV. Now, the more economically accessible Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 SUV will be the first model to feature this technology. BYD aims to broaden the availability of this advanced aerial filming solution across its vehicle range.
Technical Specifications of the Ling Yuan System
The Ling Yuan system includes a 4K drone securely housed within an aerodynamic docking station that occupies only 0.29 square meters (3.1 square feet) atop the car’s roof. The docking station, which measures 215 mm (8.5 inches) in height, features automated doors that easily deploy the drone.
Capturing Aerial Footage While Driving
Drivers can deploy the drone at speeds of up to 25 km/h (16 mph), with the capability for the drone to autonomously track the vehicle at speeds reaching 54 km/h (34 mph). Upon completion of the flight, the drone will return to its rooftop station for recharging. A charging cycle from 20% to 80% takes around 30 minutes, ensuring minimal flight downtime.
The system is user-friendly, controllable via the vehicle’s infotainment screen or through the Ling Yuan app available on smartphones. Artificial intelligence software aids in organizing and editing collected footage, facilitating easy sharing on social media.
Market Potential and Future Expansion
BYD has already demonstrated the Ling Yuan drone system on various models, including the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5, Titanium 3, Denza N9, BYD Tang L, and BYD Sealion 07 DM-i, with plans for additional models in the pipeline. However, it remains uncertain whether this system will be made available outside of the Chinese market.
