UK CAA Hiring for Policy Specialist in RPAS

Salary: £55,000 to £65,000 (dependent on experience)

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a global leader in aviation regulation, is seeking a Policy Specialist in Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). The CAA is committed to maintaining high safety standards in the aviation industry and adapting to new challenges in the field.

Role Responsibilities

In this position, you will lead and support various key projects while fulfilling daily responsibilities within the Future Safety and Innovation (FS&I) Policy team. You will also provide expert advice to colleagues and stakeholders, both nationally and internationally.

Your role will require a deep understanding of RPAS regulatory frameworks, and the ability to navigate uncertainties, emerging issues, and their implications. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as you will need to articulate complex regulatory information clearly and engage effectively with diverse partners.

The FS&I team values continuous improvement and seeks innovative methods to enhance efficiency in processes, policies, and guidance materials, especially given the rapid technological advancements in the sector.

Candidate Profile

To qualify for this position, you should possess:

  • Practical experience in either civilian or military RPAS operations.
  • Familiarity with aspects such as airspace, aviation rules, human factors, and SORA methodology.
  • A strong grasp of aviation regulatory policies.
  • Experience in project management, with a record of leading or coordinating projects.
  • A collaborative mindset focused on continuous improvement.
  • Analytical skills with the capacity to propose clear solutions to complex challenges.
  • Exceptional written communication skills, particularly in drafting technical documents.
  • An eye for detail in creating concise and accurate briefing materials.
  • A sound understanding of risk or performance evaluation frameworks.

Additional Information

Positions within the CAA may require access to sensitive operational information, necessitating National Security Vetting and specific clearances. The CAA is in the process of relocating to new premises, with plans to move within a 15-mile radius of Aviation House by 2028, aiming to minimize disruption for employees and stakeholders.
