GITAI Wins JAXA Contract for Lunar Rover Robotic Arm Research

GITAI Secures JAXA Contract for Lunar Rover Robotic Arm Study

April 1, 2025

GITAI Japan Inc., the Japanese branch of the U.S.-based robotics firm GITAI, has successfully obtained a contract from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to conduct a conceptual study for a robotic arm intended for a crewed lunar rover. This rover is a key component of Japan’s involvement in NASA’s Artemis program, which is designed to facilitate prolonged human exploration of the Moon’s polar regions.

The upcoming study will concentrate on determining the design specifications and functionalities of a robotic arm that will enhance lunar scientific operations, particularly during phases when the rover operates autonomously. In addition, the arm will play a role during crewed missions, assisting with critical tasks including:

  • Regolith excavation
  • Sample collection of rocks and soil
  • Handling and installing substantial payloads
  • Facilitating scientific activities through remote and autonomous operations

This contract leverages GITAI’s expertise in the space robotics sector, including the successful demonstrations of its robotic arms aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for autonomous construction and maintenance tasks. Notably, in 2024, GITAI launched and managed its first in-house developed 16U-class satellite in low Earth orbit, which validated essential satellite bus systems. The company has also successfully tested its inchworm-style robotic arm under extreme lunar conditions, achieving a Technology Readiness Level of 6 (TRL-6).

With its headquarters now located in Torrance, California, GITAI has expanded its operations in the U.S. and secured various contracts with NASA, DARPA, and private space enterprises. This lunar rover study represents a significant advancement in utilizing robotic technologies to support sustainable exploration and scientific endeavors on the Moon.
