Navy Selects Sierra Nevada Corp for Aircraft Carrier Precision Landing Radar Beacons
April 3, 2025 – The U.S. Navy is set to enhance the safety of aircraft landing operations with the acquisition of radar beacons designed for precision approach and landing aboard aircraft carriers. The AN/APN-246 system, which is an advanced version of the existing technology, will be integrated into the fleet’s F/A-18E/F/G aircraft and can also be utilized in platforms like the E-2D, as well as both manned and unmanned aircraft.
Officials from the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division in Lakehurst, New Jersey, revealed a contract worth $45.5 million awarded to Sierra Nevada Corp. to supply 160 units of the AN/APN-246 radar beacons, aimed at bolstering precision landing systems.
Features of the AN/APN-246
The AN/APN-246 is a sophisticated enhancement over its predecessor, the AN/APN-245, featuring capabilities that facilitate accurate ranging and guidance for aircraft approaching carrier decks in various weather conditions. This system is pivotal to the Automated Carrier Landing System (ACLS) aboard Navy carriers, providing an all-weather solution for landing operations.
Designed to be compatible with existing aircraft, the AN/APN-246 supports the future integration of advanced capabilities as technology evolves. Its compact size includes a Ka-band receiver that measures 9.5 x 7.5 x 3 inches and weighs 7 pounds, alongside a power consumption of approximately 69 watts. The system’s X-band transmitter is 7.5 x 7 x 3 inches, weighs 6 pounds, and consumes around 39 watts.
Upgraded Design and Testing Capabilities
This modern radar beacon design complies with stringent environmental and electromagnetic interference standards. Additionally, it incorporates a MIL-STD-1553 interface that ensures resilience and improved detection, especially in rainy conditions. Continuous built-in test functionality is also included to support dual-channel aircraft tracking aligned with the SPN-46 radar.
The work for this project will be carried out by Sierra Nevada Corp in Sparks, Nevada, with an expected completion date set for August 2027. For further details, you can visit the Sierra Nevada Corp’s official website at sncorp.com or the Naval Air Warfare Center at navair.navy.mil/lakehurst.
