Origin Robotics Introduces BLAZE: An Affordable Autonomous Drone Interceptor for Modern Warfare
AI-Powered Solution Bridges Air Defense Gaps
Origin Robotics, a defense startup based in Riga, has unveiled its latest innovation: the BLAZE, an autonomous drone interceptor engineered to neutralize rapid aerial threats. This system is particularly vital as global conflicts increasingly involve drone warfare, providing a budget-friendly alternative for contemporary air defense.
“In asymmetric conflicts, drones are relatively low-cost and deployed en masse to frustrate air defense systems and strike targets,” noted Agris Kipurs, CEO and co-founder of Origin Robotics. “BLAZE is crafted precisely to counter this capability—an agile, intelligent, and economical addition to air defense structures.”
The escalation of loitering munitions and the use of commercial drones in military engagements, notably in Ukraine, have heightened the demand for effective, scalable, and affordable defense mechanisms. For instance, in January 2025, over 2,500 drones were operated by Russia within Ukraine, averaging 80 per day. BLAZE provides a timely and effective countermeasure against these evolving aerial threats.
Operator-Supervised Autonomy Ensures Safety and Precision
BLAZE integrates cutting-edge radar detection and artificial intelligence to autonomously identify, track, and engage airborne targets. While the system executes most operations independently, it necessitates operator validation before engaging, thereby minimizing the risk of collateral damage and supporting informed decision-making under challenging conditions.
Outfitted with a high-explosive (HE) fragmentation warhead, BLAZE can either directly strike confirmed targets or detonate mid-air for expansive area impact. The operator has the choice to abort the mission, enabling BLAZE to safely return or self-destruct.
This fusion of automation and human control optimizes efficiency in crowded radar environments while enhancing the safety of both military personnel and civilian lives.
Designed for Quick Deployment and Tactical Versatility
Speed and portability are central to BLAZE’s design. The system is portable, and its case functions both as a launching platform and a charging station. The initial drone is deployable in under five minutes, with subsequent launches taking less than a minute each.
With a tool-free setup, teams can be mission-ready within ten minutes, positioning BLAZE as an ideal solution for rapid-response or high-intensity operations.
The platform’s scalability and cost-effectiveness allow armed forces to implement this technology widely, eliminating the financial burden associated with traditional missile systems.
Established Credibility Through Battlefield Experience
BLAZE benefits from the earlier accomplishments of Origin Robotics’ BEAK system, which is already operational with the Latvian and Ukrainian Armed Forces. The successful deployment of BEAK has cemented the company’s reputation, leading to a research and development contract from Latvia’s Ministry of Defence and support from the European Defence Fund.
Founded in response to the 2022 conflict in Ukraine, Origin Robotics combines the leadership expertise of Kipurs and co-founder Ilya Nevdah, leveraging decades of experience across the commercial drone sector to enhance defense capabilities. The company focuses on transforming conventional munitions into smart weaponry via artificial intelligence and advanced software.
With BLAZE, Origin Robotics aims to significantly influence modern defense strategies while ensuring the technology remains affordable and adaptable.
