DIU Launches Challenge for Cost-Effective Counter-UAS Solutions
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), in partnership with the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), is actively seeking innovative solutions aimed at scalable and affordable unmanned aircraft system (UAS) detection, identification, and tracking. This initiative not only addresses the traditional barriers of cost and scalability seen in established radar, optical sensors, and radio frequency systems but also looks to fortify the Department of Defense’s (DoD) counter-UAS (CUAS) capabilities with a total prize pool of up to $1,000,000.
DIU Director Doug Beck emphasized the organization’s commitment to this vital mission, stating, “We are proud to put all of the tools in our toolbox—from our early onramp network of entrepreneurs to our deep commercial engagement—into action for supporting NORTHCOM’s critical efforts to develop the DoD’s strategic counter-UAS capabilities.” The goal is to significantly boost the ability to detect and track potential threats and aid NORTHCOM personnel in safeguarding the homeland.
Matthew Way, DIU’s Lead for Counter UAS, articulated the urgent requirement for cost-efficient CUAS sensors that complement existing capabilities. He remarked, “The DoD needs more options for low-cost CUAS sensors that can augment our more exquisite capabilities to provide earlier warnings and indicators.” He acknowledged that while pursuing reduced costs, there could be trade-offs concerning detection range and accuracy.
General Guillot articulated the importance of establishing a robust layered domain awareness network ranging from seabed to space. This network is pivotal for identifying and monitoring threats targeting North America, as outlined in his testimony at the Senate Hearing regarding the posture of NORTHCOM and SOUTHCOM for the fiscal year 2026. “You can’t defeat what you can’t see,” he emphasized.
A panel of experts will assess submissions and select up to 10 finalists, with this group receiving a portion of the total funding to facilitate their participation in NORTHCOM’s Falcon Peak exercise in September 2025. The best performing vendors during this exercise will have the opportunity to compete for additional prize money.
