U.S. Air Force Chooses Booz Allen for Enhanced E-3 AWACS Communications
Date: May 8, 2025
Booz Allen Hamilton has been selected to develop an upgraded communications system for the E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force. This initiative aims to modernize the second-generation anti-jam tactical ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio system utilized within the AWACS fleet.
Located at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts, officials from the Air Force Lifecycle Management Center announced a significant contract valued at $9.7 million with Booz Allen. The contract will focus on the E-3 AWACS Communication Integration Program (ACIP) where Booz Allen is tasked with designing and constructing the advanced communication system.
The AWACS aircraft is a modified Boeing 707, equipped with a long-range surveillance radar that allows for tactical air control over regions with limited ground radar support during military operations in Iraq and Syria.
This airborne system’s mobile radar enables extensive surveillance capabilities, providing early threat warnings and supporting air traffic control during complex air engagements. AWACS has been a pivotal asset since its inception in 1977 and features a distinctive rotating radar dome atop its fuselage.
In upcoming years, the AWACS fleet is slated to transition to the Boeing E-7A, which will further advance capabilities by performing dual air and sea searches while managing combat air traffic control duties, akin to the Australian E-7A Wedgetail aircraft.
The ACIP aims to significantly enhance the E-3 AWACS’s communication capabilities, featuring upgraded radios that can leverage new military RF waveforms. This modernization initiative intends to bolster interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces, ensuring seamless connections during operations.
The installation of the upgraded systems promises to improve reliability and security in communications, enhancing the overall situational awareness for E-3 AWACS personnel.
Work under this new contract will be conducted at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma and is expected to be completed by October 2028. For additional details, you can visit Booz Allen Hamilton’s website at www.boozallen.com or the Air Force Lifecycle Management Center at www.aflcmc.af.mil.
