PteroDynamics Secures U.S. Navy Contract for Advanced Autonomous Transwing VTOL UAS
PteroDynamics Inc., a frontrunner in autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft systems, has announced a significant enhancement to its existing contract with the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD). This expansion includes a $4.65 million award aimed at the design, development, and demonstration of the next-generation Transwing® VTOL unmanned aerial system (UAS) in maritime conditions.
This contract marks the sixth and most substantial enhancement of the company’s Blue Water Logistics UAS (BWUAS) prototype agreement, initially established in 2021. The new aircraft will boast improved attributes compared to the previously demonstrated P4 Transwing VTOL UAS, which showcased its capabilities during the RIMPAC 2024 Exercise last summer.
The upcoming P5 Transwing UAS is set to have a maximum takeoff weight of 330 pounds and a minimum operational range of 400 nautical miles while carrying a 50-pound payload. Its primary role will entail executing tactical deliveries of vital repair materials across contested maritime zones, traditionally managed by manned aircraft.
PteroDynamics CEO Matthew Graczyk stated, “Collaborating with NAWCAD since 2019 has allowed PteroDynamics to refine the performance metrics that distinguish the Transwing as an exceptionally capable VTOL UAS. This contract extension is critical, as it involves the creation and testing of the new P5 Transwing, which will significantly improve the U.S. Navy’s logistics capabilities at sea.” He continued, “The specifications of the P5 align perfectly with the overarching market demand from various military branches, including the Air Force, as well as commercial and public safety sectors globally, all of which are eager to harness the Transwing’s advantages.”
Data from Navy reports reveal that numerous warships become non-mission capable primarily due to logistics challenges, particularly concerning electronic components weighing under 50 pounds. Currently, these ammunition runs are handled by the Navy’s fleet of MH-60 helicopters and V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft. Recognizing the inefficiencies associated with manned missions, Military Sealift Command has engaged NAWCAD to explore how autonomous vehicles can streamline logistics in challenging environments.
Graczyk remarked, “Maritime resupply operations are essential for naval efficiency, and there is a pressing requirement to automate these intricate and resource-heavy logistics in strategic settings like the Indo-Pacific region.”
The innovative Transwing aircraft from PteroDynamics features a unique wing folding mechanism, allowing it to transition effortlessly between vertical takeoff and winged horizontal flight. This aircraft design eliminates the need for extensive launch and recovery infrastructure and occupies less ground space compared to other VTOL options with similar wingspans.
The recent contract expansion from NAWCAD not only boosts the total agreement value to over $7 million but also qualifies PteroDynamics for an additional $5 million in future funding upon phase completion. This elevates the total potential value of the contract to $12 million.
PteroDynamics plans to design, construct, and test two P5 Transwing UAS prototypes tailored for maritime operations, adhering to the following performance criteria:
- Maximum gross takeoff weight: 330 pounds
- Payload capacity: 50 pounds over a minimum distance of 400 nautical miles
- Hybrid electric/internal combustion engine capable of utilizing JP-5 fuel
- Autonomous multi-aircraft operational capabilities
- Satellite communications enabling beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations
- Detect and avoid (DAA) functionalities
- Adaptability to diverse environmental conditions
- Transportability via C-130 and C-17 fixed-wing and CH-53 and CH-47 rotorcraft.
